A targeted audit, designed to improve
engagement for multilingual learners
The organization
An urban school district has seen a rapid increase in new immigrants from Latin America. Multilingual students have the highest absentee rates and lowest graduation rates of any subgroup in the district.
Goal
The district’s multilingual learner department wanted to understand what could be getting in the way of students feeling connected and engaged in the school experience. They also wanted to identify how they could better partner with families to increase attendance and graduation rates.
The audit
The district used the adolescent Whole-School Learning Needs Scale in high schools that enrolled multilingual students. Fig created caregiver surveys to better understand the needs of newcomer families.
Outcomes
Findings from the survey were used to understand what schools were already doing well, so this could be celebrated and replicated. The audit helped the multilingual department generate buy-in for district-wide improvement efforts aimed at students and families.
