A targeted process, designed to improve
engagement for
multilingual learners

The organization

The partner school district has seen a rapid increase in new immigrants from Latin America. Multilingual students have the lowest on-time graduation rate and highest dropout rate of any subgroup in the district.

Goal

The district’s multilingual learner department wanted to understand what could be getting in the way of students feeling connected and engaged in the school experience.

Process

Fig piloted the survey in one high school before widening administration to include all 10 secondary schools in the district. Administration focused on classrooms with multilingual learners.

Outcomes

Findings were shared with district leadership and with middle and high school principals. Findings are being used to identify promising practices that can be replicated across the district. Fig is also engaging in a co-design process with school leaders.
